After years of legal disputes, Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company finally reached a settlement that both parties accepted.Previously, she was fired for controversial remarks in "Mandalorian".
A spokesperson for Lucasfilm told Variety: "Water Disney and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have agreed with Gina Carano on the issues involved in her lawsuit. Gina has always been highly respected by the director, colleagues and staff. She worked hard on the set and always treated people around her with kindness and respect. With the successful resolution of the case, we look forward to the opportunity to work with Ms Carano again in the future."
Gina Carrano was fired by the Mandalorian crew in 2021 because she posted a series of widely controversial posts on social media, one of which compared the situation as a Republican to the experience of Jews in the Holocaust during World War II, triggering a strong backlash.Meanwhile, her agency UTA also terminated her partnership.By 2024, Carano formally filed a lawsuit in California federal court, accusing Disney of improper firing and discrimination with its subsidiary, and demanded that the court force Lucasfilm to re-activate her role and compensate her for punitive losses of at least $75,000.
Disney's legal counsel filed a motion in April 2024 to try to dismiss the lawsuit. They noted in the document that the company has the right to refuse to associate its artistic expression with Carano's speech. This position undoubtedly aggravates the differences in public opinion.
Faced with Disney's legal counterattack, Carano spoke publicly on social platform X with a fierce speech: "Disney has confirmed people's long-standing speculation - if you say something they don't like, they will fire you without hesitation. Even if you have to distort the facts, maliciously slander, deliberately misunderstand your words, they are willing to do whatever they have to do. Now, they have publicly told all employees: Disney will do everything possible to control what you say and think, or they will try to destroy your career. I'm glad we finally made it clear. The First Amendment does not allow Disney to discriminate against employees at will, and they did it in my case - in fact, they admit it now. If you want to know what the 'Disney values' are today, they have just told you in person."
It is reported that Carano's legal battle was supported by funds from Elon Musk, the owner of social platform X.The Tesla and SpaceX CEO had publicly promised in 2023 that he would pay legal fees for those fired for making comments on the X platform.
As of now, Gina Carano has not made a formal response to the settlement. But early Thursday morning, she left a meaningful sentence on X: "...The truth will make you free."
