A long legal dispute surrounding the controversial departure of Gina Carano in the Mandalorian (The Mandalorian) finally came to an end.
Disney and Lucasfilm have reached a settlement with Carano, according to the Hollywood Reporter (The Hollywood Reporter).Earlier, she filed a lawsuit against the producers of the Disney Star Wars series for being fired in February 2021.It is not clear exactly what the terms of the settlement are.
Lucasfilm said in a statement: "We have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues raised in her pending lawsuit. Ms. Carano has always been highly respected by directors, colleagues and staff. She works hard to improve her skills in her work and always treats everyone around her with kindness and respect. With the end of this lawsuit, we look forward to working with Ms. Carano again soon in the future."
Gina Carano also issued a personal statement, part of which is as follows: "I have reached a consensus with Disney/Lucasfilm, and I think this is the most ideal result for all parties. I hope this ending will bring some healing to the Force... I am excited to turn a new page and welcome the next chapter in my life. My love for art is still the same, and I hope you can continue to support me in that world."
As Cara Dune, an elite rebel fighter in the first and second seasons of the Mandalorian and later became a law enforcement officer in the New Republic, Gina Carano was once expected to star in her spin-off series. However, before the third season began, she was strongly criticized for a series of social media dynamics that were interpreted by some as anti-trans, racial discrimination, anti-vaccine and anti-Semitism, and the topic of #FireGinaCarano quickly spread. At the time, Lucasfilm representatives made it clear that Carano's statements that derogatory to others' cultural and religious identity were shocking and unacceptable."
Faced with the dismissal, Carano was not silent. She formally sued Disney and Lucasfilm in February 2024, accusing her of infringing on her right to freedom of speech and claiming to have suffered unfair dismissal. She further noted that Disney and Lucasfilm have taken a series of retaliation measures to try to limit her future acting opportunities and intentionally damage her public image.
Initially, Carano hoped to return to the Mandalorian crew, but for the moment, the possibility of her playing Cara Dun again was slim.(In the first episode of season 3, viewers learn that the New Republic has incorporated Kara into the Special Forces). At the same time, the Mandalorian series is also preparing for a big screen work - The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released next May.
