Hulu has announced a nostalgic return to the heart of Arlen, Texas.
The Disney-owned streaming platform has set an August 4 premiere date for its much-anticipated revival of King of the Hill. This revival comes over two and a half years after Hulu first revealed plans to bring the beloved series back to life. The new 10-episode season will seamlessly continue the legacy of the original show, which aired for 13 seasons on Fox from 1997 to 2010.
Time hasn't stood still in Arlen, as the new season acknowledges the years that have passed since we last visited this quirky town. In a poignant nod to the passage of time, the first glimpse into the revival (seen at the top of this post) reveals that Bobby Hill, once perpetually stuck in middle school, has grown up. The iconic opening credits retain their familiar alley setting and the cherished theme song by The Refreshments, but now feature a time-lapse montage that reflects the years gone by, including the Hill family moving out and eventually returning to their cherished home. Watch this heartfelt sequence below.
Hulu's official description of the new season paints a vivid picture: "After years spent working a propane job in Saudi Arabia to secure their retirement nest egg, Hank and Peggy Hill find themselves back in a transformed Arlen, Texas, eager to reconnect with old friends Dale, Boomhauer, and Bill. Meanwhile, Bobby is embracing his dream career as a chef in Dallas, navigating the joys and challenges of adulthood alongside former classmates Connie, Joseph, and Chane."
Much of the original voice cast returns to breathe life into the beloved characters, including co-creator Mike Judge, Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Johnny Hardwick, Stephen Root, Lauren Tom, and Toby Huss. Tragically, Johnny Hardwick, who lent his voice to the ever-paranoid neighbor Dale Gribble, passed away in August 2023. Despite this loss, Hardwick had completed some recordings for the revival, and Toby Huss graciously stepped in to carry on Dale's role for the remainder of the season.
Co-created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, King of the Hill continues under the executive production of Judge and Daniels, alongside showrunner Saladin Patterson, Michael Rotenberg and Howard Klein of 3 Arts, and Dustin Davis of Bandera Entertainment, the production company founded by Judge and Daniels. Produced by 20th Television Animation, this revival promises to honor the spirit of the original while exploring new dimensions of its timeless humor and charm.
