‘One Piece’ Introduces Key Character — and the Actress Behind It

In the realm of digital storytelling, Netflix continues to push boundaries with its live-action adaptation of One Piece. As the series progresses into its second season, fans will be introduced to a pivotal character whose presence transcends traditional live-action norms.

Rooted in the beloved manga saga, the Straw Hat Pirates are set to welcome Tony Tony Chopper into their ranks during the upcoming season. This momentous introduction was unveiled at Netflix's Tudum fan event, where actress Mikaela Hoover was revealed as the creative force behind Chopper. Joined by fellow One Piece stars Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, and Taz Skylar, Hoover’s role extends beyond conventional acting; she will lend her voice and facial expressions to bring the CG-animated Chopper to life.

Within the rich lore of One Piece, Chopper serves not only as the ship’s doctor but also as a senior officer of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Fans were treated to an exclusive first glimpse of the character at the Tudum event, offering a tantalizing preview of what lies ahead.

Hoover joins an impressive ensemble of new cast members, including Charithra Chandran, Joe Manganiello, Katey Sagal, Lera Abova, Mark Harelik, Sophia Anne Caruso, Yonda Thomas, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Brendan Sean Murray, Callum Kerr, Camrus Johnson, Clive Russell, Daniel Lasker, David Dastmalchian, Jazzara Jaslyn, Julia Rehwald, Rob Colletti, Ty Keogh, Werner Coetser, Rigo Sanchez, James Hiroyuki Liao, Mark Penwill, and Anton Jeftha. Returning for the next chapter are Ilia Isorelys Paulino, Jeff Ward, Michael Dorman, alongside Godoy, Mackenyu, Rudd, Romero, and Skylar.

Beyond her work on One Piece, Hoover is set to grace screens this summer in Superman and has a notable role in the second season of Netflix’s anthology Beef. Her extensive credits include voice performances in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Suicide Squad, and Holidate, showcasing her versatility across mediums.

Collaboratively crafted with Shueisha, One Piece finds its production home with Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partner) and Netflix. Season two marks the co-showrunner tenure of Matt Owens, who stepped down post-production, alongside Joe Tracz. Together, they executive produce with the visionary creator Eiichiro Oda, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios, Tetsu Fujimura, Chris Symes, and Steven Maeda. With anticipation building, the premiere of season two is slated for 2026.
