CNN Hopes to Gain Sustenance From Tony Shalhoub’s ‘Breaking Bread’

Tony Shalhoub is bringing a fresh perspective to a beloved culinary tradition in a new series on CNN. Known for his unforgettable performances in iconic series like “Wings,” “Monk,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” the actor is stepping into an entirely new role, one that invites viewers to explore the world through the universal language of bread.

In “Tony Shalhoub Breaking Bread,” the latest installment of CNN’s acclaimed food-and-travel documentary series, Shalhoub embarks on a global journey to uncover the profound connection between bread and culture. From Japan's delicate sourdough pizzas to Brazil's hearty cassava flour creations, he delves into how this humble staple shapes diets and traditions across continents.

“Bread is deeply tied to memory,” reflects Shalhoub during a recent interview. He shares how, throughout their travels, he and the production team encountered countless stories of people whose eating habits are rooted in cherished childhood memories. “They recall moments with loved ones—mothers or grandfathers who baked something special, served it with butter, cheese, or jam. These memories linger within us, shaping who we are forever.”

The six-part series, set to premiere this fall, marks CNN’s continued commitment to captivating audiences with original documentary programming. It follows in the footsteps of groundbreaking shows like Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” (2013), “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” and “Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico,” which have all celebrated the intersection of food, culture, and storytelling. The success of these series has even inspired spin-offs, such as National Geographic’s collaboration with Stanley Tucci following his departure from CNN.

"CNN Original Series has a rich legacy of narratives driven through food and travel," said Amy Entelis, Executive Vice President of Talent, CNN Originals and Creative Development for CNN Worldwide. "The brilliant Tony Shalhoub is a distinguished addition to our lineup of dynamic and curious storytellers at the helm of our signature programming."

For Shalhoub, this venture represents not only a professional evolution but also a personal discovery. After four decades immersed in scripted material, where comfort lay in knowing every line and expression, he now finds himself navigating uncharted territory. “I’m exploring new people, environments, and ideas,” he explains. “This experience allows me to step outside my familiar sphere as an actor and reconnect with myself in unexpected ways.”

As Shalhoub guides viewers through diverse cultures and cuisines, they will come to understand how bread serves as both a historical artifact and a cultural bridge. His approachable demeanor ensures that audiences feel included in his journey. “I don’t pretend to be an expert baker or overly knowledgeable about bread,” he admits. “Instead, I share my curiosity and invite others to join me in this exploration.”

This isn’t Shalhoub’s first brush with the culinary world; he’s already invested in two Italian restaurants in New York City and gained behind-the-scenes insights into kitchens through roles like his 1996 film “Big Night.” Coincidentally starring alongside Stanley Tucci, the movie centered around two brothers striving to save their restaurant through a single, extraordinary meal.

The concept for the series has been simmering in Shalhoub’s mind for years, sparked by a conversation with his nephew about exploring bread-making traditions worldwide. Encouraged by Tamara Weiss, an executive producer on the show and close friend, the idea finally came to fruition. Produced by Lionsgate Alternative Television under its Blackfin label, the series promises to resonate with viewers seeking meaningful connections.

Shalhoub expresses hope that the show will inspire viewers to embrace its spirit of curiosity. “My goal is simple: I want people to enjoy it and let it spark their own interest and curiosity,” he concludes. With each episode, Tony Shalhoub invites us to savor the richness of bread—and life itself—as seen through the eyes of a master storyteller.
