George Coulam, ‘Ren Faire’ Docuseries Subject and Founder of Texas Renaissance Festival, Dies at 87

George Coulam, the visionary founder and enduring owner of the Texas Renaissance Festival, whose eclectic lifestyle and quest for a successor were immortalized in the 2024 HBO docuseries “Ren Faire,” was found deceased in his home in Todd Mission, Texas on Wednesday morning. He was 87 years old. An investigation is ongoing, and the cause of death remains undisclosed at this time.

On Wednesday morning, the Todd Mission Police Department responded to an emergency call at Coulam’s residence, located adjacent to the festival grounds. The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Rangers provided assistance upon arrival. Authorities pronounced Coulam dead on the scene.

"To our Texas Renaissance family and friends, we are deeply saddened by the loss of George Coulam, the founder of the Texas Renaissance Festival," the Texas Renaissance Festival expressed in a heartfelt statement shared on social media. "For over five decades, he cultivated a vibrant community that has become a cherished tradition for countless generations of performers, staff, and guests. At this somber time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Mr. Coulam’s family and the extended Texas Renaissance Festival family as they mourn their beloved patriarch."

Tragically, Coulam's passing occurred less than two weeks after a Grimes County District court mandated the sale of the Texas Renaissance Festival, concluding a nearly two-year civil case. Judge Gary W. Chaney of the 506th State District Court also ordered Coulam to pay over $23 million in damages to cover attorney fees and compensate for financial losses incurred by the festival's prospective buyer.

The lawsuit alleged that RW Lands Inc., alongside Texas Stargate, Inc., Royal Campground, Inc., and Texas RF, Inc., had agreed to purchase the festival, its property, and assets from Coulam for $60 million. The plaintiffs claimed that Coulam and his associates failed to provide necessary documentation for the transaction and missed the agreed-upon closing date. Coulam contested these allegations.

In 1974, Coulam established the Texas Renaissance Festival, nurturing it into the largest gathering of its kind in the United States. However, the court order compelling the sale coincided with his removal as mayor of Todd Mission, a position he held since the town's incorporation in 1982. This year marked the first time someone else, city council member Stephen Mensing, assumed the role.

The operations of the Texas Renaissance Festival, a source of both pride and controversy within the local community, were captured in the 2024 HBO docuseries “Ren Faire.” The series chronicled Coulam’s reluctant search for a successor to lead the festival and the competitive dynamics among business affiliates vying for control. Over three episodes, viewers were introduced to Coulam’s dedicated online dating endeavors and his often unyielding demeanor toward his staff. The events depicted in the series unfolded prior to the emergence of the civil lawsuit against Coulam, which concluded in early May.

"Functionally, he actually is a king. He’s created a real-life fiefdom," series director and executive producer Lance Oppenheim shared with Variety before the series premiere. "The first thing he said to me was 'I used to play the king, but now I’m a horny old man. I want to find someone that can take care of the festival.' These words poured forth effortlessly from him. Perhaps he sought an outlet—an individual beyond his control. He doesn’t have any friends whom he doesn’t employ."

In recent years, Coulam encountered additional legal challenges, including allegations of sexual harassment and wrongful termination. A 2021 lawsuit filed by a former employee accused Coulam of compelling her to navigate "sugar daddy" websites to facilitate his romantic pursuits. The festival eventually settled the case.
