Dominic Sessa Officially Signs on to Play Anthony Bourdain in A24 Biopic ‘Tony,’ Antonio Banderas Joins Cast

In an upcoming biographical film from A24, “The Holdovers” star Dominic Sessa is set to embody the essence of culinary icon Anthony Bourdain. Joining him in this cinematic journey is Oscar-nominated actor Antonio Banderas, whose role remains shrouded in mystery. The film, titled “Tony,” is directed by Matt Johnson, known for his work on “Blackberry.” Set in 1976, it captures a pivotal chapter in Bourdain's life as he navigates the vibrant yet challenging world of Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Cameras are scheduled to roll next month, marking the beginning of a project that has been in development since last summer when reports first surfaced about Sessa's involvement. This period drama precedes Bourdain’s enrollment in culinary school by two years and delves into the experiences that shaped the man who would later captivate audiences with his 2000 memoir, "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly." Renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to unscripted television through series like “No Reservations” and “Parts Unknown,” Bourdain was posthumously honored with an Emmy Award. Tragically, the culinary legend passed away in 2018 at the age of 61 in Strasbourg, France.

Directed by Matt Johnson, the screenplay for “Tony” is penned by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. A24 will collaborate with Star Thrower and Zapruder Films to co-finance and co-produce the film. Star Thrower, helmed by Tim and Trevor White, recently completed another A24 project, the drama “Eternity,” directed by David Freyne and featuring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, Callum Turner, and Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Johnson and Matthew Miller will serve as co-producers under the banner of Zapruder Films.

Kimberly Witherspoon, representing Bourdain’s estate, joins Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, Lou Howe, Todd Bartels, and Emily Rose as executive producers. This ensemble aims to honor Bourdain's legacy while bringing authenticity and depth to the portrayal of his early days in the culinary world.

Matt Johnson, fresh off the success of “Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie” at SXSW, is represented by CAA and Chris Spicer at Akin Gump. Dominic Sessa is managed by CAA, Untitled, and Steve Warren at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller. Antonio Banderas is represented by Emanuel Nunez at NuCo Media Group and George Hayum at Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman.

Star Thrower is represented by CAA and attorney David Boyle, ensuring a robust team to bring this compelling story to life.

``` This version enhances emotional resonance by focusing on Bourdain's legacy and the significance of the film's subject matter. It also refines the language to evoke deeper engagement with the narrative and characters involved.
