Description

Cheol Ung, a rookie firefighter, finds himself stepping into the Rescue Unit of a bustling Seoul fire station. The air is thick with anticipation as he embarks on his first mission alongside Jin Seop, a seasoned veteran whose reputation precedes him—a man celebrated for saving more lives in fires than anyone else in the city. On this fateful day, amidst roaring flames and choking smoke that seem to consume everything in their path, Cheol Ung witnesses something that will haunt him forever. Against explicit orders from the chief to retreat, Jin Seop insists on searching for one last occupant trapped inside the inferno. As the building groans under the weight of the fire's fury, Jin Seop emerges just in time, clutching a young girl in his arms. But the triumph comes at a devastating cost: another firefighter doesn’t make it out alive. Cheol Ung’s initial fear transforms into seething anger toward Jin Seop. How could someone so revered allow such tragedy? He blames Jin Seop for the loss of their colleague, questioning whether heroism can ever justify such reckless endangerment. Their strained relationship simmers with tension, each man carrying his own pain and doubts about the other. But before their conflict can fully unravel, another alarm blares through the station—a fire call that neither of them could have anticipated. This new blaze becomes the crucible where their fates intertwine, testing not only their courage but also their ability to understand and trust each other. In the heat of battle, they must confront their deepest fears, grapple with the weight of responsibility, and discover what it truly means to carry the burden of saving lives—and sometimes losing them. For what it's worth, Namu Wiki noted the flat characters and narrative. I also don't always agree with Korean viewers. I can only guess that familiarity with the event and film style (?) probably contributed to the positive reception.

I’m not against what the movie sought to stand for. I was annoyed by the delivery. When I was debating whether to leave, two others left. I don’t know why they had left, but it’s not often I see people leave, let alone me leaving. Sigh.

I watched this to support Lee Jun Hyuk, but even he couldn’t keep me engaged until the end. I don’t often walk out of the cinema, but I did with this movie. The execution was really poor—bad pacing, poor direction, and a truly boring script. And in my personal opinion, the acting was also subpar (no disrespect intended). I know it was based on a real event, but the portrayal of that event just didn’t work. The first hour was hard to sit through, and it was frustrating to watch how they acted during the mission. They didn’t seem to have any strategy and were moving/talking in unrealistic ways—the captain literally stood and moved slowly most of the time, even in the middle of a fire. Telling your colleague, whose life is literally at risk, that you’re throwing the rope down only to take forever to actually throw the damn rope down just didn’t make sense. Being calm is one thing, but I really didn’t get any sense of urgency from the captain, even in the situation where his colleague was hanging precariously for dear life. And the stubbornness of that one captain put an entire team at risk. Simply ignoring the command to evacuate made no sense. He was almost just bulldozing his way through with no real plan. There are so many ways to tell this story without compromising humanism or the message. Unfortunately, the director’s storytelling approach wasn’t for me. It’s a real shame. It could’ve been a real tribute to the lives that were lost.

The Koreans seem to like it. Maybe it's because of the message?
