Amanda Seyfried: ‘It’s Not Very Brave to Do Sequels. It’s Just for Money and It’s Frustrating.’

Amanda Seyfried recently sat down with “Superman” star Rachel Brosnahan for an insightful Interview magazine discussion. During the conversation, Seyfried candidly addressed Hollywood's growing reliance on sequels, acknowledging her own role in perpetuating this trend as the star of films like “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” and “Ted 2.” Despite her involvement in these projects, Seyfried remains passionate about bringing fresh stories to life, including a potential sequel to the cult classic “Jennifer’s Body,” which she hopes to co-star in once again alongside Megan Fox.

Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane in James Gunn’s highly anticipated reboot of the Superman franchise, shared her excitement about the film's release this July. The movie arrives amidst a wave of major Hollywood sequels, sparking playful banter between the two actresses about the overwhelming presence of franchises in today's cinematic landscape.

“We have Jurassic Park [‘Jurassic World Rebirth’], ‘Superman,’ and ‘Fantastic Four.’ What’s our Barbenheimer between ‘Fantastic Four,’ ‘Jurassic Park,’ and ‘Superman’?” Brosnahan quipped, drawing laughter from both herself and Seyfried.

“It’s Fantastic Super-park,” Seyfried replied with a chuckle. “It’s Four Superparks. Four Dinosaurs. Four Super Dinosaurs. I don’t know!” Her tone shifted slightly as she expressed her longing for more original content. “There’s definitely some fatigue with sequels. I crave new stories, ones that push boundaries and take risks. It takes real courage to create something truly unique—and unfortunately, many studios shy away from that because they’re focused solely on profit margins. But hey, if someone offered me ‘Mamma Mia 3,’ I’d jump at the chance.”

Brosnahan echoed Seyfried’s enthusiasm for returning to beloved roles, sharing her eagerness to reprise Lois Lane in a future “Superman” sequel. “Absolutely, I’d come back,” she affirmed. “The experience was incredible, and there are so many talented cast members I didn’t get the opportunity to collaborate with yet.”

Reflecting on the often contradictory attitudes within the acting community regarding blockbuster franchises, Brosnahan added, “I don’t mean to criticize other actors, but it seems disingenuous when people accept roles in big franchises only to later complain about them. There was a time when it became trendy to dismiss superhero movies, treating them as less artistic or meaningful. If you choose to be part of these projects, stand by your decision proudly.”

Meanwhile, Seyfried revealed her unwavering commitment to reviving “Jennifer’s Body” with Megan Fox. In a recent interview with Variety, she emphasized, “I’m not doing it without Megan.” Beyond this project, Seyfried will also return to voice her iconic character in an upcoming animated sequel series of “Ted,” currently in development at Peacock.

Fans can catch James Gunn’s “Superman” in theaters starting July 11, courtesy of Warner Bros., where they’ll witness Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane bring fresh energy to the storied DC universe.
